Arsenal have ‘understood’ star’s situation as exit avenue grows more likely

Arsenal have been told that Lucas Torreira would like to return to Italian football this summer by his agent.

Torreira joined the Gunners from Sampdoria in 2018 and looked like an ideal midfield reinforcement. He made 89 appearances across two seasons before falling out of favour under Mikel Arteta. Thus, he joined Madrid on loan for the 2020-21 season, as Thomas Partey came the other way.

Despite winning the La Liga title, it was not a particularly happy year for Torreira. On the pitch, he only made three league starts. Meanwhile, in his personal life, his mother passed away, prompting him to consider his future.

In the wake of her death, Torreira seemed eager to return to South America. Joining Boca Juniors in Argentina was one option for the Uruguay international.

But his father soon revealed that Boca were unlikely to sign him. Thus, Torreira is now considering other options. One likely route would be to return to Serie A.

Lazio are particularly keen on the 25-year-old as they prepare for the transition to new coach Maurizio Sarri.

The Rome-based side have now been boosted in their pursuit after Torreira’s agent gave a clear message about a potential move to Italy.

Pablo Bentancur told Tuttomercatoweb: “He wants to return to Italy.

“Clubs have called me from France, Russia and Spain. But Lucas wants to re-embrace the Italian league to return to demonstrate his value again.

“Arsenal have understood the situation and will meet with us.”

Torreira could swap with Correa

Last summer, Arsenal used Torreira to help them sign a top target in Partey. This summer, a similar scenario could repeat.

Arsenal are one of the suitors for Lazio forward Joaquin Correa and could use the Italians’ interest in Torreira to their advantage.

The Gunners are yet to make a formal move for Correa. But that could change in the coming weeks and months.
