Arsenal make offer for upgrade on Emery signing, but CAS holding up deal

Arsenal have made an offer for Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana and are waiting for the outcome of his appeal against a doping ban, claims a report.

The Gunners are looking to add some depth to their goalkeeping ranks and Mikel Arteta is understood to want Onana to challenge Bernd Leno for the No. 1 role.

There is growing uncertainty over the future of first-choice goalkeeper Leno, who may well leave the Emirates this summer. Arteta has denied that they will sell Leno, but rumours persist over the Unai Emery signing.

Australian goalkeeper Mat Ryan is also keen to extend his stay at Arsenal after joining the club on loan from Brighton in January.

The Times claims Arsenal have made an offer for Onana, 25, who is under contract in Amsterdam until 2022.

The Eredivisie champions had hoped to agree an extension with Onana, who could leave for free next summer.

Director of football Marc Overmars confirmed to ESPN in April that the negotiations had failed: “The state of affairs is that we cannot resolve it. That means that we have stopped negotiating.

“That could be,” Overmars responded when asked if Onana could leave on a free. “But he may be trying to make a transfer in July. It’s a shame we can’t figure it out.”

Arsenal are believed to have lined up a £7m deal.

However, one factor complicating any prospective deal is that Onana is currently suspended for a doping violation. Onana, who kept nine clean sheets in 20 games this season has not played since January.

The Cameroon international is appealing the 12-month suspension he received in February for testing positive for the diuretic Furesomide at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Arsenal to miss out on Edouard

If, as it stands, he cannot play until February, then the £7m transfer fee could be lowered.

Arsenal are also down the line in a bid to land Ruben Neves from Wolves.

The same source suggest Arteta is trying to negotiate a deal for the £35m Portugal star.

While, the Gunners look set to miss out on Odsonne Edouard from Celtic. The 23-year-old striker looks destined to leave Parkhead, but a move to link up with Brendan Rodgers looks likely.

The France Under-21 forward is said to prefer a reunion with Rodgers, whom he played for during Rodgers’ time at Celtic.

Rodgers signed him for Celtic from Paris Saint-Germain for a club-record fee of over £8m in 2018.
