Arsenal named as contenders to re-sign divisive but improved former star

Wojciech Szczesny has been tipped to make a shock return to Arsenal if Juventus sign Gianluigi Donnarumma this summer.

AC Milan recently confirmed that Donnarumma would be leaving them as a free agent in the summer. They have already secured a deal for his replacement, Mike Maignan. Now, there will be plenty of interest in Donnarumma on a free transfer. Already with six years of experience under his belt but still only 22, he is one of the world’s most promising goalkeepers.

The Italian has been linked with a move to Chelsea or Manchester United, for example, but could yet stay in Italy. Juventus are keen to not miss out on the opportunity to strengthen in goal for years to come.

Their current number one is Szczesny, who has done little wrong in his time in Turin. Much improved since his Arsenal days, the Poland international is one of the best keepers in Serie A.

But given that he is nine years older than Donnarumma, Juventus are now looking to the long-term. Szczesny would not be content – and does not deserve – to be demoted to backup. So, he will have to find a solution.

According to Gazzetta Dello Sport (via Sport Witness), one option for the 31-year-old could be a sensational return to Arsenal.

Szczesny was not the most consistent player in his previous spell in north London. He may have some convincing to do to win over Arsenal’s fans again, but if he plays to the standards he has in Italy, that would help.

Szczesny would also count as a homegrown player after coming through Arsenal’s academy, which adds to his appeal.

However, it is not yet clear if Arsenal will make a formal bid. They are simply mentioned as a candidate to sign him at this stage.

If it was to happen, the potential return would be bad news for Bernd Leno, who would instantly face strong competition for the starting berth in goal.

Leno’s performances have come into question, but Mikel Arteta has denied he will leave. If they pursue another keeper like Szczesny, though, it could prompt a change of plan.

Alternatively, Szczesny has also been linked with fellow Premier League clubs Chelsea and Everton. But a return to familiar surroundings at the Emirates Stadium would certainly be an eye-catching move.

Arsenal also eyeing Ramsey return?

Another Juventus player who could make a return to Arsenal is midfielder Aaron Ramsey.

It recently emerged that Juventus are looking to sell the Welshman, whose preference would be to return to north London.

“Aaron Ramsey would love to join Arsenal again,” said transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. “At Juventus he is struggling, he’s not playing, many injuries.

“He will be on the market 100 percent, he will be available. If Arsenal want to go for Ramsey, they know they have the chance.

“But at the moment there’s nothing advanced or serious with Ramsey yet.”
