Arsenal need to be convinced over formula amid new interest for midfielder

Marseille have joined the race for Arsenal misfit Matteo Guendouzi, according to reports in France.

Guendouzi joined Arsenal from Lorient in 2018 but fell out of favour when Mikel Arteta replaced Unai Emery. After two seasons in north London, the midfielder was sent on loan to Hertha Berlin in the Bundesliga last summer. But the chances of that move becoming permanent are in doubt.

With Arteta still at the helm, Guendouzi is unlikely to have a future back at the Emirates Stadium. Hence, they must try to sell him before his contract expires in 2022.

One club who may be willing to take him off their hands, according to La Provence, is Marseille.

The Ligue 1 giants are in the market for a new midfielder and could offer Guendouzi the chance to return to his homeland. However, they must agree on the formula of the deal.

Marseille would prefer to take Guendouzi on loan, but that seems difficult for Arsenal. If the loan lasted the whole season, it would take him up to the expiration of his contract – unless Arsenal unexpectedly extend his deal.

He is interested in the idea of moving to Marseille, though. They are currently fifth in Ligue 1 so could qualify for the Europa League if they hold on.

Guendouzi wants to play in Europe again after not having that opportunity with Hertha this season. Therefore, a move to Marseille might appeal.

Arsenal criticised over Guendouzi stance

Back in March, the man who signed Guendouzi for Arsenal explained his confusion at their decision to let him and Lucas Torreira go.

Mislintat told The Athletic: “I respect Mikel a lot. I’d love to talk to him one day, to understand his reasons for sending Matteo as well as Lucas Torreira on loan, and tell him my view in relation to their qualities.

“If you’re not playing Matteo in midfield, it must be a very strong midfield.”
