Arsenal, Tottenham among contenders as attacker tells Lazio he wants out

Arsenal and Tottenham have been boosted in their pursuits of Lazio forward Joaquin Correa after he decided he wants to leave the Serie A side, according to reports.

Correa is on the radars of both north London rivals after it was predicted he would be leaving Lazio recently. The arrival of Maurizio Sarri as their new head coach will prompt a style shift and the Argentine forward may fall victim to his new plans. Therefore, several Premier League clubs are keeping an eye on his situation.

Not an out-and-out centre-forward but a dangerous player for defences to deal with nonetheless, Correa has scored 30 goals in 117 games for Lazio. His three-year spell there may be coming to an end though. The Italian side need to sell someone to fund the signings Sarri wants and Correa is a candidate to make way.

At first, it seemed he was willing to fight for his place. But now, it seems he is warming to the idea of a move – and the Premier League remains a likely destination.

According to Corriere Della Sera, it is practically a certainty that he will leave Lazio. He has now made it clear to the club that he wants to leave, most likely for a new adventure outside Italy.

Correa’s agent has reportedly been in contact with both Arsenal and Tottenham, who have expressed an interest in recent weeks. It is unlikely they are willing to meet the €40m asking price. But those demands could quickly drop now the player’s intentions are clear.

The news is backed up by Calciomercato, although they believe Lazio’s requests are actually for a €50m fee.

The website still suggests Arsenal are one of the leading contenders to sign Correa. However, Paris Saint-Germain could also offer him a new platform in France.

Those two clubs appear to be the main suitors for the forward, despite Tottenham also being keen. As soon as Lazio soften their stance, anyone could pounce.

The Rome-based outfit only spent €16m on him, so should make a large capital gain without having to ask for too high a figure.

Arsenal could lure Correa in swap

One way for Arsenal to lower Correa’s price tag would be to send a player in the opposite direction.

That seems to be a likely strategy, with one report recently naming the man who could depart in the deal.

Sky Sport Italia claimed that Lucas Torreira could move to Lazio in order to make room for Correa at the Emirates Stadium.

Torreira previously spent his entire career in Serie A before joining Arsenal. The move to north London did not quite work out and he left on loan for Atletico Madrid last season, where he won the La Liga title but only as a bit-part player.

Now, the midfielder wants to return to Italy, where Lazio could be willing suitors.

If a deal suits all parties, it could be the key to unlocking a potential signing of Correa. However, the likes of PSG and Tottenham are still in the running for his signature too.
