Aston Villa make decision for star pushed down pecking order by signings
Aston Villa are open to offers for striker Wesley Moraes this summer after his injury troubles, according to a report.
Wesley joined Villa from Club Brugge in 2019 and scored a respectable five goals from 21 Premier League appearances in his debut season. However, things came to a halt when he suffered a cruciate ligament injury in January 2020, half a year after his arrival. He only returned in April 2021.
Villa have been proactive in the summer transfer window, strengthening all areas of their squad. Among their signings has been Danny Ings, the reliable striker who has joined from Southampton.
With Ollie Watkins also proving himself as an excellent option last season, Wesley will face a battle to regain a starting place. Therefore, the Daily Mirror suggest that he could be sold.
It is not yet clear if any suitor has advanced a deal for Wesley. However, Villa will be listening to any proposals they may receive.
They spent £22m to sign the Brazilian two years ago, but are unlikely to recoup that fee due to his recent injury history. But they may still find someone willing to pay them a decent price for a player with three years of contract left.
Still only 24, Wesley could have plenty to offer still. But it may be best for all parties if he tries to rediscover his form away from Villa Park.
Even more worryingly for Wesley, Villa continue to be linked with additional attackers. For example, they have been mentioned as one of the suitors for Lazio forward Joaquin Correa.
Villa considering Correa transfer
Throughout the summer, Correa has been regularly linked with a move to the Premier League. The Argentina international is on the lookout for a new challenge.
Various reports in the Italian media have put Tottenham, Everton and Aston Villa in the frame for his signature. However, none of the trio appear prepared to blink first.
According to Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport, Correa’s agent has thus far failed to generate concrete interest.
Lazio’s valuation of Correa may be the barrier preventing an official bid from being lodged. They have ‘been asking for €40m’, but ‘everyone is convinced’ that a bid of around €30m-plus-bonuses could twist their arm.
A sum as low as €25m could even be capable of sealing a deal as the window wears on.
