Aston Villa transfer news: Gerrard pieces falling into place for mouthwatering double swoop

Everything looks to be falling into place at Aston Villa with a report making exciting claims over prospective deals regarding Rodrigo Bentancur and Yves Bissouma.

Villa have been tracking a genuine defensive midfielder since Marvelous Nakamba went down with a long-term knee injury last year. Indeed, Nakamba’s role between the more attacking midfield players was discernible under Steven Gerrard.

That position looks to be the missing piece of the puzzle at Villa Park, as other positions have been strengthened.

As such, Villa uncovered a couple of top players who could come in and fill the role.

Bentancur and Bissouma are both players Gerrard has pursued in January. That said, the Seagulls are eager to keep hold of Bissouma this season.

The Birmingham Mail states that the deal for Bentancur will likely go through in January. Indeed, the Uruguayan would be an upgrade in the position.

However, it also states that Villa will continue their pursuit of Bissouma into the summer. With the Malian’s contract up at the end of next season, the Villans could poach him for a cut-price fee.

That deal would also consolidate for the potential loss of Douglas Luiz, who has played as a defensive-midfielder this season. Reports state that Arsenal are keen on taking the Brazilian to the Emirates.

Signing both Bissouma and Bentancur would give Villa a host of options in the defensive-midfield position next season.

Furthermore, they are both apt in the number eight position, so could comfortably play in the same team.

Villa also want McAtee in midfield

While Villa are keen on strengthening the defensive-midfield positions, they are also keen on adding talent to the attacking regions. Man City’s James McAtee is seen as a top prospect for the future.

Indeed, McAtee is being hailed as ‘the next Phil Foden’ so teams are rightly keen.

Given his impact in City’s Under-23s it is clear that he should be a top player.

Villa want to poach him from City, and see him develop under Gerrard.
