Bayern Munich temptation prompts Tottenham target to snub new contract

Marcel Sabitzer has told RB Leipzig that he has no intention of renewing his contract with them, according to reports in Germany.

Sabitzer has been a Leipzig player since 2014, although he spent his first season on loan away from the club. Since his debut in 2015, he has risen in importance and currently serves as captain. But, after more than 200 appearances, his association with the Red Bull side could be ending.

Regularly linked with more established European giants in recent months, Sabitzer has been a top target for Tottenham ever since his goals knocked them out of the 2019-20 Champions League.

He has remained in the club’s thinking even after the departure of Jose Mourinho, who subsequently has eyed the player for Roma, although such a deal looks unlikely.

In fact, Sabitzer’s next destination may still be in Germany. Rumours are growing about a transfer to Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

According to Bild, talks between the two clubs are underway. A transfer to Bayern would see him follow his ex-Leipzig coach, Julian Nagelsmann, and recent teammate, Dayot Upamecano.

Amid these developments, Goal and Spox report that Sabitzer has told Leipzig he does not want to sign a new contract. His current deal is due to expire in the summer of 2022, so they must now consider cashing in to avoid losing him – potentially to a direct rival – for nothing.

At present, there has been no formal bid from Bayern for the Austrian midfielder’s services. However, their interest is clear.

According to Sport1, there are three clubs Sabitzer would be willing to sign for and Bayern are one of them. But the Bundesliga champions must sell players first to make room for the 27-year-old. Corentin Tolisso or Michael Cuisance may be at risk.

If Sabitzer is to move this summer, he would cost an eight-figure sum.

Sabitzer could cost £17m

While he has a €50m release clause in his contract, Sabitzer could be on the move for much less this summer due to the lack of time left on his deal.

A report last month, backing up Tottenham’s interest under new coach Nuno Espirito Santo, claimed that Sabitzer may be available for just £17m.

For a 27-year-old with more than 50 international caps and experience in one of Europe’s biggest leagues, that could be a bargain.

But as things stand, Bayern Munich are looking more likely to sign him than Spurs are.
