Brazilian goal machine ‘enjoys’ Prem amid links to ‘mega team’ Tottenham

Flamengo striker Gabriel Barbosa has been linked with a move to the Premier League and reserved special praise for ‘mega team’ Tottenham.

The 24-year-old is hot property back in his native Brazil, where he has been scoring goals for fun. And that has already alerted a number of, as yet unnamed, Premier League clubs. But it is thought the capital is a likely destination, with Spurs and West Ham mentioned as possible suitors.

The Brazil international does have experience of European football. He was on the books at Inter Milan for four years. But, having signed from Santos in the summer of 2016, he failed to make his mark.

The Sao Paulo-born ace made only 10 appearances in all competitions for the Italians and a number of loan moves followed. He was sent to Benfica in August 2017 but enjoyed just four outings.

The Serie A club recalled him and then immediately loaned him back to Santos. The forward thrived in his homeland, scoring 27 goals from 53 appearances.

He remained in the South American nation but switched clubs in January 2019. Flamengo secured a year-long loan deal and were rewarded with an amazing 43 goals from 59 outings.

Unsurprisingly, Rubro-Negro made the deal permanent 12 months later, with Barbosa signing a four-year deal. And he has continued to find the net for the Maracana Stadium giants.

The man with 12 Brazil caps has netted 47 times from 63 appearances and is clearly attracting attention throughout Europe.

And, in an interview with The Sun, he confessed that he has unfinished business in Europe.

“I played my role, I dedicated myself to the maximum in training, my Italian course, my adaptation, nutrition,” he said. “Today, a few years later, I know I could have done some different things. My experience in Europe was a very quick story, I still feel frustrated.”

Barbosa keen on Premier League

Although Barbosa’s best work has been done in Brazil, he is a keen follower of English football. The Sun are reporting that he is ‘on the radar’ of a few clubs.

And the man nicknamed ‘Gabigol’ reeled off a list of those he enjoys watching, with Spurs particularly to his liking.

“I still watch it now. I really like Pep Guardiola’s style at Manchester City, Chelsea managed to form a great team with Thomas Tuchel’s hands,” he added.

“Liverpool have a very interesting team and a fantastic coach. Tottenham is a mega team and I really enjoyed the West Ham season. I’m a big fan of Premier League football.”
