Brendan Rodgers positive in defeat as Leicester boss praises ‘iconic’ Newcastle

Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers admitted he was ‘happy’ for Newcastle United fans despite a last-minute winner defeating his side 2-1.

It was Leicester who took the lead after 19 minutes, as some well-worked play was finished off by Ademola Lookman. Newcastle responded before the break with Bruno Guimaraes, and the Brazilian wasn’t finished there. Guimaraes’ last-minute header found the back of the net, as St. James’ Park erupted in cheers for their new hero.

The defeat leaves Leicester ninth in the table, as they face relegation-threatened Everton next on Wednesday evening.

Three points for Newcastle leaves them 12 points clear of the relegation zone with six games remaining – effectively securing their safety for another season.

And despite a devastating ending, Rodgers admitted it was hard to not feel joy for the Newcastle faithful.

As quoted by The Shields Gazette, he said: “I’m so happy for the people here, the supporters.

“It’s always a great feeling I think when you come to here.

“It is one of the cities and grounds that I have really enjoyed coming up with whether it be Swansea, Liverpool or Leicester.

“It’s great for the supporters because the passion here is incredible and Eddie has come in and made a very good start. He’s made some really good signings and obviously that gives a great hope to the supporters.”

Brendan Rodgers believes Newcastle will build in summer

Rodgers went on to admit he believes that Newcastle can grow even bigger next season.

Following the recent Saudi takeover, it will be no surprise to see the Magpies bring in a few big-named signings once the transfer window opens.

And Rodgers believes that once business is completed, Newcastle can become an even more special place.

He said: “I’m pretty sure they’ll look to build on it in the summer but this is one of the iconic football clubs in Britain and I think everyone would feel that if you can get it going here it will be a special place.

“There was a great atmosphere in the game, we’re just disappointed with the result. Performance wise we were good and congratulations to Newcastle.”
