Bruno Fernandes highlights major Man Utd flaw in warning to teammates

Bruno Fernandes has warned his Manchester United teammates they must improve one particular area of their game after suffering a second home defeat in just 48 hours.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men followed up their 2-1 loss to Leicester on Tuesday night with a 4-2 reversal against Liverpool on Thursday evening. United scored first against their bitter rivals, but Jurgen Klopp’s men hit back to secure an impressive triumph at Old Trafford.

The two goals Liverpool scored before the break came from a corner and free-kick. That means the Red Devils have conceded 14 times from set-pieces, not including penalties, with Leeds the only Premier League side to concede more.

And Fernandes pinpointed those frailties and warned his teammates they must improve if they want to mount a stronger title challenge next season.

“We started well, we scored, we created more chances after that. But we conceded two goals from set-pieces and we have to work on that,” he told MUTV following the defeat.

“We’ve conceded too many goals from set-pieces this season and everyone is disappointed in the dressing room.

“We know we have to improve and do better and we have to do it in the next game because we want to secure second place.

“I think the performance was good, we kept the ball well. We played side-to-side, we tried to do what we trained.

“But when you go down 2-1 and you have to play 45 mins against a team like Liverpool, you give more space to them and they take that space, we concede another two goals.

“Everyone was disappointed in the dressing room because we made big mistakes. But we learn from that and we have to keep improving and understanding we are not at our best yet.”

Missing Maguire a big loss

Solskjaer also acknowledged that United have plenty to work on defensively, with United struggling without injured skipper Harry Maguire.

“Today, the goals we conceded, set-plays, disappointing. That’s a set situation that we don’t defend well enough,” Solskjaer explained.

“It’s something we have to work on because we’ve conceded too many goals from it.

“Football would be really boring if nobody made a mistake and that’s the whole idea of football. You try to eradicate them and work on them, but we’ve conceded too many goals.

“We could have avoided some of them, especially the timings of them.

“We’ll work on it, brush up on a few details, pay attention to details on set-plays, and put the players in the frame of mind that these set-plays are vital in football.

“A third of goals come from set-plays in football and we can do so much better. And when we do that we’ll improve.”
