Gianluigi Buffon has rejected an offer from Atalanta because he would prefer to move abroad when he leaves Juventus, according to reports.
Buffon recently confirmed that this would be his last season with Juventus. He has been with the club since 2001, except for the 2018-19 season, which he spent with Paris Saint-Germain. Hence, it will be the end of an era when he ends his time in Turin.
At the age of 43, Buffon is yet to confirm if he will retire or keep playing elsewhere. He has still made 13 appearances for Juventus this season as deputy to Wojciech Szczesny. If somewhere can offer him more regular gametime, he may delay hanging up the gloves.
According to Gazzetta Dello Sport, one of the clubs to enquire for Buffon has been Atalanta. However, he has reportedly turned them down.
The reason is because he does not want to play for a team where he could come up against Juventus. Hence, he is more likely to move abroad if he does continue his glittering career.
There could be the option for Buffon to move to the MLS, or the Middle East.
It remains to be seen which option the 2006 World Cup winner will choose – or if he will call time on his career completely.
Buffon to leave Juve happy
One of Buffon’s final appearances for Juventus came on Wednesday, when they beat Sassuolo 3-1.
As the emotions begin to sink in, he explained how he still prepares himself to play at this level and said he would leave the club with no hard feelings.
“I was trying to put pressure on myself during the warm-up as I think that’s the best way to get into the right frame of mind, especially when there are no fans,” he said.
“We have a great team but we haven’t been consistent enough and that’s why we’ve dropped points we wouldn’t normally expect to along the way. However, in one-off matches we’ve shown we can give anyone a game.
“When I re-joined Juve I saw it was a test for myself in a new role and I’m happy because I think I’ve always gone about the job with enthusiasm. I’ve given everything to Juve and received even more in return. I’ll leave a happy man.”
