Burnley sack Sean Dyche in final throw of the dice to avoid relegation; replacement hunt underway
Burnley have sacked Sean Dyche and three of his backroom staff in a surprise last-ditch attempt to stave off relegation to the Championship.
The Clarets are staring down the barrel of relegation this season. Burnley currently lay in 18th position, four points behind Everton in 17th.
Sean Dyche has often found a way to beat the drop during his nine-and-a-half year tenure at Turf Moor. However, his luck has finally run out.
Burnley have officially confirmed Dyche has been relieved of his duties with eight matches in the season remaining.
Along with Dyche, assistant manager Ian Woan, first-team coach Steve Stone and goalkeeping coach Billy Mercer have also been axed.
Burnley statement on Dyche sacking
A club statement read: “Firstly, we would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Sean and his staff for their achievements at the Club over the last decade.
“During his time at Turf Moor, Sean has been a credit both on and off the pitch, respected by players, staff, supporters, and the wider football community.
“However, results this season have been disappointing and, while this was an incredibly difficult decision, with eight crucial games of the campaign remaining, we feel a change is needed to give the squad the best possible chance of retaining its Premier League status.
“The process of replacing Sean has begun and further announcements will be made to supporters in due course.”
The timing of the dismissal is curious – just two days before they face West Ham on Sunday.
Regardless, Burnley’s decision-makers clearly feel there is no time to spare if they are to beat the drop and they are of the belief they stand a better chance without Dyche at the helm.
While their hunt for a new manager is already underway, there is no indication as to who could be appointed as yet.
