Change in approach by West Brom’s Ismael for Bristol City pays off big
A change in tactics from Valerien Ismael paid off big time as his West Brom side breezed past a lacklustre Bristol City.
Following their mid-week defeat to Swansea, Ismael felt it was necessary to alter his approach for their next game. Against City this was evident, as the new-look Baggies earned a 3-0 victory. Ismael explained post-game his thought process in changing formation.
Speaking to Express and Star, he said: “It was clear against a back three that we wanted to do something to change the approach and it worked well at some times.
“But again we made too many mistakes and we need to improve that.
“But three goals, a clean sheet and great stuff we played at times — I am delighted.”
The change in formation saw Jayson Molumby and Robert Snodgrass form a fresh midfield partnership in a 3-4-3 shape.
And Ismael was impressed with how his squad looked in the centre of the pitch, with Snodgrass receiving special praise from the gaffer.
“They (Molumby and Snodgrass) did very well.
“For me, Robert Snodgrass is man of the match.
“He’s the perfect example for a player who has had to wait for his chance. Stay focused, work hard, listen, learn the principles of what we want to do and when you get your chance, put on the performance to make sure the team stays successful.”
Striker Jordan Hugill gave the home side an early lead in the match.
Kyle Bartley then added a second before half-time as the Baggies dominated proceedings.
It was three not long after the restart, too, as Karlan Grant netted for the third successive game to take his tally for the season to seven.
Two medical emergencies cause delay
Two separate medical emergencies in the crowd led to delays at the Hawthorns.
However, it was confirmed after the game that thankfully both supporters are now conscious in hospital, where they will receive further treatment.
“First of all I’ve been told the two fans and the Bristol player are well. So from my side the best wishes and those of the staff and the club goes to them,” Ismael said.
There was further delay when Bristol City’s Nathan Baker was involved in a collision. That saw him leave the pitch receiving oxygen.
Baker was taken to A&E and is reporting well.
