Chelsea squad set for huge CL pay-day in alternative bonus scheme

Chelsea’s first-team squad will share a bonus pot of £11m if they can win the FA Cup and Champions League finals later this month.

The Athletic report that Thomas Tuchel’s men have already banked £5m be reaching the Istanbul final. They will also collect £1m if they can beat Leicester at Wembley on May 15. However, the players will be due to share another £5m if they beat Manchester City in the Champions League showpiece.

The Sunday World report that Chelsea’s figure is laid out in a “player incentive scheme/schedule” which lists bonuses for each season.

Ten per cent will be due to players sidelined by long-term injuries and to those who were mainly unused substitutes or in the match-day squad, but not on the bench.

The remaining 90 per cent will be spread across the squad depending on how many starting and sub appearances player have made.

N’Golo Kante will be due the biggest haul, after making 12 appearances in the competition so far. Edouard Mendy, Jorginho, Timo Werner and Kai Havertz have all made 11.

Chelsea’s players were believed to be on £5m bonus for winning the Premier League.

The Stamford Bridge club work their bonuses slightly differently to the majority and rivals Man City.

The collective system, rather than individual bonuses for club achievements is aimed at promoting team togetherness.

Man City meanwhile operate an individual bonus system and have specific win bonuses written into their contracts. Their biggest earners can expect to land around £1m each for winning the club’s first Champions League.

Leicester City’s squad, meanwhile, will land a minimum £10m bonus if they secure a place in next season’s Champions League.

Brendan Rodgers’ men are within touching distance of a top-four finish. After an agreement at the start of the season the money will be split among the squad if they qualify for the competition for the first time since 2016-17.

Mount v Kroos

Meanwhile, the Mason Mount-Toni Kroos spat has got interesting this week.

Mount responded to Kroos’ after dumping Real Madrid out on Wednesday night, and appeared to take exception to Kroos’ comments.

In his post-match interview with CBS Sports, Mount said: “I saw one of their players say before that he doesn’t lose sleep over individuals.

“But as a team, they need to lose sleep over us as a team. We give so much, we defend for our lives.”

Not content to allow Mount to have the last laugh, Kroos has taken to Twitter to deliver his response.

Kroos congratulated his fellow midfielder on Chelsea’s achievement, but delivered a pointed barb when emphasising this will be Mount’s first showpiece occasion.

Kroos wrote: “Still sleeping ok. But well done yesterday. congrats. Good luck in your first CL final.”
