Conor McGregor admits interest in Man Utd, Celtic ownership

Conor McGregor says he “likes Man Utd” after claiming he had talks over acquiring Celtic shares from Dermot Desmond.

The mixed martial arts star made the revelation in a question-and-answer session on Twitter.

The Irishman has previously been pictured in a Celtic shirt given to him by Kieran Tierney.

After being asked by a fan whether he was “actually going to buy Manchester United”, McGregor said: “A conversation came up regarding Celtic first to be honest. To acquire shares from Dermot Desmond.

“I am certainly interested in acquiring a sports team at some stage! Both Celtic and Man United are teams I like for sure. But I am open. I feel I could do big things for a club.”

Principal shareholder Desmond declared in March that his shares were not for sale.

McGregor, who banked around $130m from his 2017 fight with Floyd Mayweather, has not disclosed when the talks took place.

The Dublin-born fighter has also not disclosed just what level of investment he was interested in.

Desmond currently holds just under 20 per cent of shares. The Hoops are valued at around £120m on the stock market.

Man Utd ownership

Manchester United’s ownership is currently a hot topic after the club’s owners the Glazers attempted to get the club into the doomed European Super League.

After the fans protested and subsequently got last weekend’s game with Liverpool postponed, co-chairman Joel Glazer has told supporters he is willing to discuss increasing fan shareholding in the club.

“I would like to reiterate my sincere apology for the mistakes that were made.

“In particular, I want to acknowledge the need for change, with deeper consultation with you as our main fan representative body across a range of important issues, including the competitions we play in.

“We also recognise the importance of fan and football interests being embedded in key decision-making processes at every level of the club. And we are open to constructive discussions on how to reinforce that principle,” said Joel Glazer.

The Manchester United Fans’ Forum had written to Glazer urging him to open up shares to fans.

United are currently owned by the six children of the late former owner Malcolm Glazer: Avram, Joel, Kevin, Bryan, Darcie and Edward Glazer.

Malcolm Glazer took hold of a majority stake in the club in 2005 through investment company Red Football Ltd.

In March 2021, Avram Glazer put £70m worth of his shares up for sale.
