Crystal Palace kick off momentous summer with new deal for resurgent star

Crystal Palace have rewarded star striker Christian Benteke for his late season surge to the tune of a new two-year contract extension.

Crystal Palace are set to embark on one of their most important summer’s in recent memory. The club enjoyed a relatively danger-free campaign, beating the drop by 16 points and finishing in 14th position. However, several key decision are about to be made regarding both on and off-field personnel.

Roy Hodgson’s retirement leaves the Eagles in search of a fresh face at the helm. Former Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo appears to be the frontrunner. Though Frank Lampard is also speculated to be in the frame.

On the pitch, things are even more interesting. Per Transfermarkt, no fewer than 15 first-team players are out of contract come the end of June.

That number was 16, until news broke of a new two-year extension for Benteke.

The Belgian, 30, enjoyed a fantastic late season surge that saw him net in four consecutive matches. His season-long goals tally of 10 was the most since his maiden campaign at Selhurst Park in 2016/16 (15).

“A lot more to come” – Benteke

In a statement on the club website, Benteke said: “I’m happy and proud to commit my future to Crystal Palace.

“Five years already and still a lot more to come. We have a great group of players and staff, and I’m looking forward to the season ahead and playing in front of our fans again.”

Chairman Steve Parish said: “Christian has been an integral part of consolidating our position as an established Premier League club over the last five years.

“He is an outstanding professional and has more than proven that he still has the quality and the hunger to perform for our club at the highest level.

“I couldn’t be happier to see him in red and blue for another two seasons.”
