Crystal Palace to meet with exciting manager but must beat other clubs

Crystal Palace have been boosted in their pursuit of Lucien Favre and apparently plan to hold talks with the former Borussia Dortmund manager soon.

Palace are currently on the hunt for a successor to Roy Hodgson in the Selhurst Park hotseat. The former England manager did a fine job of stabilising them after Frank De Boer’s turbulent four-game reign ended in 2017. But it is the end of an era at Palace after the coach’s contract expired and they decided to go in a different direction.

With several players out of contract as well, whoever replaces Hodgson has a big rebuilding task on their hands. That has already put off candidates like Frank Lampard, for example.

Palace were in talks with Nuno Espirito Santo after his departure from Wolves. He seemed to be receptive to their ideas, but pulled out of talks because he wouldn’t have been able to bring all his backroom staff.

It has thus been back to the drawing board for Palace. But a new contender for the position has emerged in recent days.

According to The Guardian, Favre is keen to manage in the Premier League and Palace could welcome him. The Swiss coach has been out of work since leaving Borussia Dortmund in 2020 and could fit the profile Palace are looking for.

No longer content to play in a pragmatic way to achieve safety, Palace want a more attacking approach. Favre favours that philosophy, so could be the ideal candidate if they can convince him.

Their hopes of doing so have taken a boost after reports from Milliyet, indicating that Fenerbahce seem to have shifted their focus away from Favre despite meeting with him.

Instead, the Turkish side look set to appoint former Hull City and Everton boss Marco Silva. That could give Palace a freer run at Favre.

Favre to accept best offer

However, The Sun have warned that there are other suitors for the 63-year-old. His decision will hinge on who makes the best offer.

Palace thus have some convincing to do, but Favre could be their ideal candidate, giving them motivation to make a good offer.

According to Sky Sports, they want their new manager to help promote their young players. Favre has a reputation for doing so, which adds another element of appeal.

What’s more, they would not need to pay any compensation fee to buy him out of another contract. That may put him at an advantage over other candidates like Sean Dyche and Valerien Ismael, who are already contracted to Burnley and Barnsley respectively.

But they must put together the right package to convince Favre first.
