Darwin Nunez reacts to Klopp hints at Liverpool transfer switch as rumours continue to escalate

Benfica striker Darwin Nunez has reacted to Jurgen Klopp’s praise for his qualities amid ongoing talk that Liverpool could actually make a move for the player this summer.

The Uruguay international is enjoying an incredible season so far and has already scored 32 goals in a stellar campaign, leading to talk that he could be snapped up by a European heavyweight in the summer – namely Liverpool or potentially Manchester United.

Indeed, Nunez impressed again as he scored in Benfica’s 3-3 Champions League draw at Anfield on Wednesday evening, although the Portuguese outfit crashed out of the competition after a 6-4 aggregate defeat.

Before Wednesday’s clash, Klopp made no secret of his admiration for the 22-year-old, saying: “Extremely good-looking boy and a decent player as well.

“Really good, really good, I have to say. I knew him before, of course. But he played pretty much in front of me with these tough battles with Ibou Konate.

“Physically strong, quick, was calm around his finish when he finished the goal off. Good, really good. Obviously how you say in these situations, if he stays healthy, it’s a big career ahead of him.”

Klopp may have been teasing Liverpool‘s interest a little with his comments, which also made their way to Nunez.

The young forward told TVI, as reported in the Daily Mirror: “What the Liverpool coach said, as well as our coach, I take it as a compliment, but my mind is on Benfica. Until the season is over, I won’t say anything, and I’ll leave everything for this shirt.

“My job is to continue like this, to take advantage of this luck that is happening to me. Last year I didn’t play at all, but this year I’m having an incredible season.

“I have to continue like this, and there is also a lot of merit from my colleagues.”

Nunez class too good to ignore

One thing is for sure. If he does carry on in a similar vein it’ll be impossible for big clubs to ignore him.

The Reds could even be on the lookout for a new central attacking option, given that Roberto Firmino’s contract runs out in the summer of 2023, while United have been tipped to use Edinson Cavani to try and seal a transfer.

As for Liverpool’s next Champions League test, they will face Villarreal in the last four. The Spanish side shocked Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals.

The other semi-final sees Manchester City taking on Real Madrid, with the final taking place in Paris on May 28.
