David Moyes rues ‘missed opportunity’ as West Ham fail to find winner against Burnley

David Moyes believes his side ‘missed an opportunity’ to close the gap at the top as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Burnley.

Burnley took the lead in the first half through Wout Weghorst, putting pressure on West Ham early on. The hosts pushed hard for an equaliser, however, some good saves by ‘keeper Nick Pope prevented the Hammers from finding the net. However, West Ham finally got their breakthrough after Tomas Soucek connected with his body from a free kick to direct the ball into the Burnley goal.

Before this, Burnley had the chance to go two ahead after Maxwel Cornet was brought down inside the box by Lukasz Fabianski.

However, Cornet dragged the subsequent penalty wide, gifting West Ham the opportunity to get back into the game.

The hosts may also feel like they could have won all three points. Diop had a header which looked destined for the bottom left corner towards the end of the game, however, the effort was somehow kept out by Pope.

And reflecting on the game, Moyes feels the match was a missed chance to close the gap on the top six.

As quoted by BBC Sport, he said: “It is a game where we missed the opportunity. We had an opportunity to challenge the teams above us but we have missed it.

“We were playing quite well and knocking on the door at that time but went on to concede the goal. Then we had a great chance to win the game with the amount of chances and we probably should have.

“We’ve been doing OK up until now. We will keep ploughing on and keep picking up results. Nick Pope had a couple of really good saves but hopefully we will score them in the next games.”

David Moyes believes horror injury impacted the game

The fixture had a nine-minute delay after Burnley striker Ashley Westwood was forced off on a stretcher.

The striker collided with West Ham’s Nikola Vlasic, and looked to be in instant pain.

The Croatian alongside Arron Cresswell, who was closest to the incident, appeared distraught following the injury. Vlasic was even seen in tears, having to be consoled by teammates.

And Moyes admitted he believes the incident impacted his sides performance in the moments after.

He said: “It was a terrible injury to Ashley Westwood, which derailed the speed of the game for a while. We lost concentration during that period, but that was our fault and nobody else’s.”
