Discarded Atletico Madrid star elevates up Tottenham transfer shortlist with deal thought to be possible

Mario Hermoso is the latest left-footed centre-back to be linked with a transfer to Tottenham Hotspur after reportedly emerging as the easiest to acquire of three options.

Tottenham Hotspur will be in the market for another central defender in the summer. They signed Cristian Romero last year and he has done well on the right of a back three. But for balance, they now may need to invest in someone on the other side of Eric Dier.

That territory is usually occupied by Ben Davies. However, it is not a natural position for the Wales international, who arrived at the club as a full-back. Therefore, as Tottenham Hotspur search for a new defender, it will be a left-footer they look for.

In that regard, the Daily Mail are suggesting they could make a move for Atletico Madrid defender Mario Hermoso.

The soon-to-be-dethroned La Liga champions could cash in on the 26-year-old this summer. His contract with them only runs until 2024 and he has not started in La Liga since early February.

Therefore, Tottenham could take advantage by making their move. Hermoso was on their radar last summer as well, the report reminds.

Since then, his situation at Atletico Madrid has deteriorated. Hence, he may be a good option for Tottenham to pursue.

The Spain international is 26 years old and has amassed plenty of experience. Diego Simeone has used him a total of 93 times since signing him in 2019 from Espanyol, where he had played 59 games across two seasons.

A Real Madrid youth product, Hermoso has good pedigree and may be a good fit for Tottenham if they can get a deal over the line.

Mario Hermoso more accessible than two alternatives

Importantly, he could be their easiest signing to make instead of two other options. Also on their radar, according to the report, are Josko Gvardiol of RB Leipzig and Alessandro Bastoni of Inter Milan.

Gvardiol has been linked with a number of Premier League clubs after developing well in his debut season with Leipzig.

Bastoni, a title winner under Antonio Conte with Inter Milan in Serie A last season, is further down his development but still has plenty of potential. That said, reports have cast doubt on whether he would want to join Spurs.

Besides, both those players could have higher asking prices. Hermoso, in comparison, cost Atletico in the region of £25m.

Although his current value is not clear, the idea is that Simeone’s side would sell for the right price.
