Dublin names Rodgers trait meaning Leicester FA Cup glory just the start

Dion Dublin has heaped praise on Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers and feels their FA Cup triumph could open the floodgates to further glory.

The Foxes won the prestigious competition for the first time on Saturday, with a 1-0 victory over Chelsea at Wembley. Youri Tielemans scored the only goal of the match on 63 minutes. It may have taken a while to come but was well worth the wait.

The Belgium international let fly from 25 yards and gave Blues goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga no chance. It was no more than the East Midlanders deserved and they held on to claim the spoils despite late Chelsea pressure.

Kasper Schmeichel kept Leicester ahead with a couple of spectacular saves. And Dublin felt both players were superb throughout the contest.

“Youri Tielemans was man of the match,” he told BBC Sport. “It was an amazing performance and goal and Kasper Schmeichel’s save, he could not have seen it until it was about three yards away and he somehow clawed it out.”

Leicester were rightly lauded for their spectacular Premier League success of 2015-2016. It has not all been plain sailing since then but Rodgers has got the club back on track.

And Dublin believes the Northern Irishman’s ability to give players time has been a key factor.

“It’s a little bit of patience that Brendan Rodgers has shown with his younger players and the senior players got on board with what he wanted,” he added. “Jonny Evans, what a very good player he has been, (Jamie) Vardy and (Kelechi) Ihenacho have been outstanding and Tielemans and (Wilfred) Ndidi, have been part of that defensive midfield that works.”

Dublin sees good times ahead at Leicester

Leicester just missed out on a top-four spot in 2019-2020. But, far from wallow in their own self-pity, they picked themselves up and are close to securing a Champions League spot.

They sit third in the standings and are six points clear of fifth-placed Liverpool. Qualification is in their own hands as they face fourth-placed Chelsea in a re-run of the cup clash on Tuesday.

Things are looking good and ex-Foxes striker Dublin sees no reason why they will not challenge for silverware on a regular basis.

“Leicester have got it right and Brendan Rodgers has got it right,” he continued. “I don’t think this is a one-off, I think they will be in this situation quite a few times.”
