Duo will ‘definitely leave’ Man Utd in January with enormous financial hit likely

Manchester United will reportedly be left licking their financial wounds with two big-name stars firmly expected to leave in January – in exits that will cost the club millions.

The first man through the exit door will reportedly be Donny van de Beek. The Dutchman – a £40m signing from Ajax in summer 2020 – has cut an isolated figure at Old Trafford. Indeed, after starting just four Premier League games last season,hHis only appearances in the top flight this term have been from the bench.

A report from the Telegraph has revealed that several Manchester United fringe players feel they have been misled by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Van de Beek is one of them after failing to get the gametime he would have expected. Indeed, after leaving Ajax as one of their top prospects, it’s been a major comedown for him at Old Trafford.

Plenty of sides though remain keen – and Tuesday’s Paper Talk threw another Premier League side into the mix.

As such, former United midfielder Luke Chadwick, speaking to Caught Offside, claims the Dutchman is likely to be on his way.

“You want to see him play,” he said. “Obviously we don’t know what’s going on behind closed doors. Perhaps there’s a good reason he’s not had the opportunities, but he doesn’t seem like the kind of player to have a bad attitude.

“The performances he showed at Ajax made him look like he could become a world class player. I think it’ll be good to see him go elsewhere and play. You’d rather he did that at United but sometimes it doesn’t fit, it might just not be the right club for him.”

Chadwick also expects United will suffer a heavy financial loss for Van de Beek.

“If he’s not going to play now with the team in the form it’s in, I can’t imagine he’s ever going to play. The next few weeks I can imagine will be crucial for his future.

“If he’s still not playing regularly then I expect he’ll be off in January. And maybe for quite a big loss financially. He’s hardly played since he signed for the club.”

Lingard to also leave in a cut-price deal

Another player tipped for the exit door is Jesse Lingard. He was the subject of a big-money approach from West Ham over the summer having caught the eye during a loan stint last season.

United could have taken upwards of £20m for Lingard over the summer. However, with just a few months left now on his deal, a fee for around half that amount is likely.

Chadwick added: “There’ll be a huge amount of suitors for Jesse Lingard. I’m not even sure West Ham would be that much of a step down for him. When you look at the position they’re in and the position United are in.

“Is Lingard worth giving a run of games? He knows the club inside out and has done well for them in the past. He’s also done fantastically well for England. If he’s not going to get any game time between now and January I’m sure the club will try to cash in.

“I think Lingard’s capable of playing for the upper reaches of European football. But West Ham also seems like a good move for him, he performed so well there in his loan spell. He knows the players and the surroundings, so it could work for him. But you also feel if he was given a run of games for United he could do a job too.”
