Eddie Howe hails Newcastle hero as fans love last-minute winner

Eddie Howe was full of praise for Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes as he scored a last-minute winner to earn all three points over Leicester City.

It was the hosts that fell behind at St. James’ Park after just 19 minutes thanks to a well-worked goal rounded off by Ademola Lookman. Newcastle pressed hard for an equaliser, and were eventually rewarded through Guimaraes before the break. The Brazilian midfielder wasn’t done there, as a header after 95 minutes of play found the back of the net – all but securing safety for Newcastle this season.

Guimaraes was a star player throughout the game, and was gifted a loud applause as he exited the field at full time.

And boss Howe admitted the new Toon star is ‘magnificent’ in every aspect of the game.

He told Sky Sports:  “To score so late in the game is a massive lift for everybody.

“I thought we had the best chances. Leicester were probably in control of the game but we had some really good moments and I thought our defensive resilience in the second half, as Leicester took control of the ball, was excellent. We hung in there, and got rewarded for that with the counter-attack goal at the end.

“Yes, they love him (Bruno Guimaraes) and rightly so after today’s performance. He was magnificent in every discipline of the game.

“I think the biggest compliment I could give him is that on 95 minutes, with tired legs, for sure, for him – he’s getting used to the Premier League – but he’s managed to get himself in the box to score that header.”

Eddie Howe impressed with response after falling behind

The match-up didn’t start in an ideal manner for Howe’s side. After falling behind, the Magpies had to work hard to get back into the game.

However, Howe was adamant that his side responded in the perfect way to not let the initial goal damage them.

He said: “The response was massive. How you respond to conceding is key in these moments especially at home.

“The crowd needed to see that response, and we got back into it quickly. It was vital we did that before half time.

“We had to be really, really good with the details of our defending. We were, and we got rewarded right at the end.”
