Everton face being pipped to promising transfer by European powerhouse

Barcelona have been identified as a potential landing spot for promising youngster Luis Diaz, who was targeted by Everton in the summer.

Everton registered their interest with Porto for the winger over the summer, in an attempt to bolster their attacking options. Wingers had been identified as a problem for the Merseysiders, amid the departures of Theo Walcott and Bernard from the club.

The Toffees did sign Demarai Gray and Andros Townsend over the summer, both of whom have made an immediate impact. Townsend has seven goal contributions so far this season, with four for Gray.

Everton manager Rafa Benitez has demonstrated his talent for signing good fits for his side during his short tenure. Diaz is a young player that Everton obviously liked the look of going forwards. He would be no exception to Benitez’s fantastic recruitment.

Diaz is in elite company, finishing the Copa America with Colombia as joint top goalscorer, alongside Lionel Messi.

Barcelona clearly see the Colombian as an apt replacement for Messi, following his departure to Paris Saint-Germain this summer. And according to Marca, Barcelona president Joan Laporta has added Diaz in his list of transfer targets.

It is clear to see why any team would be keeping tabs on Diaz. The star has scored five times in seven Liga Bwin games already this season.

Were Barcelona, or any other club to make an offer, it may dent Everton’s chances of landing the promising winger.

Everton did make Porto an offer in the summer, with the lure of James Rodriguez plus cash, but nothing materialised due in part to James’ high wages.

Everton’s second offer on deadline day was also rejected. It is unclear whether they remain interested in pursuing the Colombian in January and beyond.

Everton’s exceedingly impressive start

Everton have impressed massively since the beginning of the season. The Toffees currently sit fifth in the Premier League, and are only one point behind league leaders Liverpool.

Gray and Townsend have revolutionised their careers since signing at Goodison Park, and are already contributing to winning games. The pair have gelled with the rest of the squad immediately, amid their starring roles, and that is evident on the pitch.

The squad that has been built over the past couple of years is the envy of many, and with Benitez at the helm, it is an exciting time for fans.

Everton travel to Old Trafford on Saturday, and a win would mean they leapfrog Manchester United into fourth place.
