Everton ‘in talks’ over new boss as chairman Kenwright favours another

Everton chairman Bill Kenwright is reportedly backing a move to bring David Moyes back to the club despite rumours that talks have already begun with Nuno Espirito Santo.

The Toffees are in the market for a new manager after the shock defection of Carlo Ancelotti to Real Madrid. Ancelotti, 61, had been in charge at Goodison Park since December 2019 and there was nothing to suggest he would leave. But Zinedine Zidane’s Bernabeu exit left the door open for the Italian to return for a second spell in Madrid.

A number of names were immediately put forward as to who might replace the veteran. Former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has been mentioned along with ex-Reds skipper Steven Gerrard.

But it seems as though two names are at the top of the list. Moyes spent 11 years in charge of the Merseysiders between 2002 and 2013 before leaving for Manchester United.

Things did not go too well for the Scot as he failed to shine at Old Trafford,  Real Sociedad and Sunderland. The 58-year-old eventually ended up at West Ham but left after just 31 games.

He was subsequently re-hired and guided the Hammers to sixth in the Premier League. He is reportedly negotiating a new deal at the London Stadium.

But Football Insider are suggesting Kenwright has never forgotten the job Moyes did and would love to see him back. It is said that the 75-year-old wanted Moyes recruited when Marco Silva was sacked two years ago.

Nuno talks ‘under way’

Whether the theatre producer gets his way only time will tell but there appears to be backing for Nuno. The Portuguese tactician quit Wolves at the end of the season after four successful years at the helm.

He guided the West Midlanders to the Premier League, where they have more than held the own. But he quit after what was a below-par campaign by their previous standards.

According to Sky Sports, Everton are holding talks with the 47-year-old as he is their main target. It has been claimed that majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri is a big fan and sees him as the man to take the club forward.

He is said to have ‘strong support’ in the Everton boardroom, with the hierarchy hoping to name their new manager soon.

Everton finished 10th in the top-flight table after being in the top four at the turn of the year. There will be no European football but the new man will have the nucleus of a decent squad to work with.
