Everton have been advised by one pundit to not appoint latest managerial target Antonio Conte – because he offers only a short-term solution.

The Toffees have been searching for a replacement for new Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti in recent weeks. Their attempts so far have been in vain. Nuno Espirito Santo and Rafael Benitez emerged as strong candidates. But those in charge at Goodison Park are taking their time in appointing a new manager. Indeed, it was reported last week they are assessing eight potential options for the role.

One of those eight is potentially Conte. The Italian left Inter Milan after winning Serie A last season due to his dissatisfaction with the financial situation at the club.

It was reported recently that Everton had made contact with the former Chelsea boss.

But former Leeds and England defender Danny Mills has warned the Everton hierarchy against the acquisition. Mills feels he would not offer the long-term stability that they should be aiming for.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “It’s difficult, Conte’s going to want top dollar. He’s going to want players to bring in and may change the squad and team too much.

“This is where Marcel Brands and Farhad Moshiri have to have a long-term business plan of where they want to go and the type of football they want to play because that’s a five or six-year plan.

“Getting success in next season or the season after with Conte is short-termism. If they’re looking at the long-term future of the club it’s like ‘Ok, what sort of manager are we bringing in? What sort of recruitment do we want?’

“The last thing you want is a different manager with a different style of football who brings in a load of players and then it’s not worked and 18 months down the line a manager comes in with a different style of play with a new set of players and you start all over again.

“You’ve got to have that continuity and I think with Farhad Moshiri and Marcel Brands that’s what they’ll be looking like. What does the next six or seven years look like? Not just the next two.”

Conte could return to England yet

Conte looked set to become the new Tottenham boss earlier this month. The north London club are also searching for a new manager this summer.

The 51-year-old held talks with Spurs. However, he opted against taking the role.

When asked by Gazetta dello Sport about his reasoning for doing so, he said: “Generally, I like challenges and I’ve accepted many of them during my career.

“Even the top clubs I coached were never the favourites when I arrived. However, if there’s something that doesn’t convince me I prefer not to accept, regardless of the money.”

Everton would certainly provide him with said challenge. Renowned manager Ancelotti only managed to guide the Toffees to a 10th placed finish last season.
