Ex-England star names two signings to get Manchester United into title contention
One former England midfielder believes the arrival of Declan Rice and Harry Kane at Manchester United would turn the club into title contenders once again.
Carlton Palmer, who played for Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds and Southampton in the Premier League and was capped by England 18 times, believes the England pair would project Manchester United into league contention alongside Man City and Liverpool.
The pair have been linked with a move to Old Trafford. But Kane came closer to joining Man City last summer.
Pep Guardiola made a couple of bids for the Spurs No 9, but Daniel Levy stood firm and Kane eventually decided to stay put. Whether he will remain there again next season, under Antonio Conte, remains unclear. But it will take a monster fee for Levy to sell to a Premier League rival.
Rice for his part has also been linked with both Manchester clubs after seeing his stock rise considerably over the last two years.
Indeed David Moyes, who valued Rice at a prohibitive £100m last summer, has now raised that valuation.
“The first thing to say is that he is not for sale,” said Moyes earlier this month.
“But if you are interested, well, it will be north of that. Because £100m was cheap last summer, and £150m just now would be minimum. But he is not for sale.”
Palmer, 56, for his part does not think the deals will happen, but he told GiveMeSport that the duo would get United into title contention again: “Of course, they’ve got to be title contenders. I don’t think it’s going to happen.
“They definitely need to strengthen at the back. They definitely need a midfield player, and they definitely need a front player. So, we’ll have to see.”
United look likely to lose Paul Pogba on a free transfer at the end of the season. The France international has yet to sign a new deal and looks set to a switch.
Cristiano Ronaldo could also follow him out of Old Trafford. But that decision may revolve around prospective new coach Erik ten Hag.
The Ajax boss is on the verge of being handed the reins to Old Trafford. And the 52-year-old will surely be looking to bring in his own transfer targets.
Indeed one of the main conditions of Ten Hag taking the job, according to Fabrizio Romano, was that he wanted involvement in the club’s transfers.
