Exit beckons for shunned PSG ace, with West Ham likely to benefit
West Ham have emerged as a likely destination for Paris Saint-Germain defender Layvin Kurzawa, with the Frenchman likely to move on in January.
Kurzawa has played an important role for PSG since joining from Monaco in 2015. Despite being hampered by injuries, the left-back has been a regular feature for much of that time, when available.
However, since the arrival of Mauricio Pochettino as manager, his involvement has ceased, almost entirely.
Kurzawa, who has won four French titles at PSG, has made just one appearance this season. Beyond that, the 29-year-old has made just four matchday squads.
The Frenchman reportedly ‘wants to leave’ per Foot Mercato (via Sport Witness). Given Pochettino’s reluctance to play him, it is clear to see why Kurzawa is unhappy, and feels he has been ‘pushed towards the exit door’.
That report claims that a move to the Premier League may be on the cards, with West Ham interested. He has also previously been of interest to Crystal Palace.
Left-back is a position that is causing the Hammers some problems at present. Aaron Cresswell is currently injured, and Ben Johnson, who has deputised there, is just returning from a hamstring problem.
In addition, the preferred centre-back partnership of Angelo Ogbonna and Kurt Zouma are both out for extended periods.
Furthermore, 20-year-old right-back Harrison Ashby started for just the third time in his career in the EFL cup against Tottenham. Though he seemed capable, David Moyes would likely rather not risk using the youngster in the Prem too much.
Should the Hammers sign Kurzawa, he would add to the depth at left-back. The 29-year-old has also played both centre-back and right-back before, albeit only a handful of times. As such, a player of his quality, who could be deployed anywhere across the back line, could certainly be a good signing for West Ham.
Kurzawa could join talented Hammers side
The Hammers have an abundance of top quality players at the moment. One of the standout performers in the squad this season has been Declan Rice.
“He’s in the England team, so it’s not holding him back at all. To me, West Ham look like a team who are on the up. They could be challenging for trophies in the next year so hopefully, for West Ham’s sake, he stays another few years there,” he said.
Indeed, Rice has established himself as a quality player for England, while he has been at West Ham. As such, he could remain, and try to win trophies at the club, while instating himself as a club legend.
