Fernandes busts myth about his ‘best’ game after achieving big Man Utd first

Bruno Fernandes insists that the Manchester United first he achieved in last Thursday’s win over Roma did not make it his best game for the club.

The midfielder posted two goals and two assists in the same game for the first time since joining the Red Devils. Such a stat may come as a surprise, given that he has scored 38 and laid on 24 others in just 74 games. However, he has previously – to put it one way – posted either a goal and two assists, or vice versa.

Nevertheless, Fernandes is fully aware of the numbers he produces, such is his strive to improve.

As such, he told reporters ahead of Thursday’s Europa League semi-final second leg against the Italian club, that he is striving for even more contributions.

“For me, the game against Roma was not my best, but on numbers, everyone will say it is the best one I have done because two goals and two assists I think was the first time I did that for the club,” Fernandes said (via Goal).

“I think also individually I played really well but I want to improve.

“I want to improve so I have to do maybe next time two assists and two goals, or three goals and two assists to improve again, but the most important for me is the way we win and we are closer to getting the trophy.”

However, Fernandes is also aware that football is a team game and that trophies in the cabinet are the product of 10 outfield players and a goalkeeper.

As such, winning the Europa League would represent progress in the midfielder’s bid to help United return to the top of English football.

However, the Red Devils are all-but guaranteed of a spot in next season’s Champions League by finishing in the Premier League’s top four this season.

As such, Fernandes has warned that there will be tougher times ahead during which United must prove themselves.

Fernandes wants Man Utd progress

“For us, it is a signal of improvement if we win the Europa League, because last season we didn’t win anything,” he added.

“So, if we win a trophy this season it is an improvement – but still not enough for us.

“But it is something growing up from the club. From the players, it is a sign that we are doing a little bit better, but we have still a lot to improve on as I said before, and we will improve.”

The Europa League could follow the Champions League in hosting an all-English final.

Chelsea and Manchester City are through in Europe’s premier competition, while Arsenal could join United if they beat Villarreal and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men see their 6-2 first leg result out.
