Fernandes insists there is overriding ‘sign’ after scooping big Man Utd prize

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes insists that there is always room for improvement, after scooping the club’s Player of the Year award again.

The Portuguese star has received the award for the second successive season, amid another stellar campaign. His assist for Edinson Cavani’s lob against Fulham on Wednesday was his 46th goal contribution in 57 appearances. Indeed, his tally of 28 goals has seen him beat Frank Lampard’s record for goals in one campaign from a Premier League midfielder.

He picked up the award last season after turning United’s season on its head.

After arriving last January, he scored eight goals and laid on seven others in 14 Premier League games to lead a top-four charge in the second half of the season.

This time round, he has helped his side finish second in the top-flight table and reach next Wednesday’s Europa League final.

Nevertheless, the midfielder says that team accolades such as European silverware are much more important to him.

“It means a lot,” Fernandes told MUTV of winning the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award. “I always said individual trophies are really good for players.

“It lifts you up, of course. I would never say I don’t want individual trophies.

“[But] it’s not more important than a group trophy, a team trophy, for me, but it is always important.

“It is something you’re doing well, you’re doing your game really good, doing the right things, it means you can do a little bit more, means you can also improve a little bit more.”

“But at the same time it means people are liking you, the way you play, the way you’re trying to help the team, the way you do things – so that is more important for me.

“But more important than that is winning a trophy at the end of the season and this is all about this because football is a team sport and for me it’s about winning trophies.”

United face Wolves in their final Premier League game of the campaign on Sunday, before facing Villarreal in the European showpiece.

Solskjaer offers Man Utd transfer prediction

Meanwhile, United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has refused to rule out a striker signing in the summer transfer window.

United have tied Cavani down to a new deal, but his time with the club is limited.

Longer term, there is talk of Harry Kane moving to Old Trafford from Tottenham in a mega-money deal.
