Florentino Perez expected to get his wish and push through January loan for Man Utd man

Real Madrid are expected to make a move to sign Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani in the January transfer window, according to a report in Spain.

Los Blancos president Florentino Perez is believed to be a big admirer of the Uruguay striker.

Cavani’s future at Old Trafford looked far from assured at the end of last season. The 34-year-old seemed intent on returning to South America. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer though managed to get the striker to pen a new one-year contract.

Solskjaer then went and landed Cristiano Ronaldo, who has spearheaded United’s attack so far.

Whether Solskjaer handed Cavani any playing time assurances is unclear, but the player was linked with a move out of the club late in the August transfer window.

Barcelona were said to be priming an offer for Cavani.

According to Mundo Deportivo, via Sport Witness, Barca were in the market for a new striker. And RAC1 reporter Gerard Romero reported Barca were in ‘very advanced negotiations’  with Cavani ahead of a late deal to sign him.

The deal never materialised and Fabrizio Romano said the decision to stay was “confirmed by all parties involved”.

Cavani or Ronaldo?

Now though Real Madrid have come to the table, with El Nacional reporting Perez wanted Cavani on loan in August.

Radamel Falcao and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang were the other names on the table for Real, per the report.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti, who was appointed in June. was not as keen and he eventually prevailed with Eduardo Camavinga the only addition at the Bernabeu.

The interest from Perez though remains and the report indicates Perez will likely get his wish. And with Falcao and Aubameyang “already very difficult”, Real “will focus on Cavani”.

Whether or not Cavani will be receptive to the idea will probably revolve around his United game time. He has just returned from injury and appeared as a late sub in the Aston Villa defeat. He was also a late replacement in Wednesday’s late win over Villarreal.

Solskjaer’s me host Everton on Saturday. It will be interesting to see if Ronaldo, 36, gets his sixth start in three weeks or whether Solskjaer turns to Cavani.
