Forgotten Liverpool man hints at plans for next season amid future doubts
Ben Davies has revealed he has completed rehabilitation on a calf injury as the focus turns to his future at Liverpool.
Davies was a surprise signing for Liverpool in the January transfer window when they needed more cover in defence. He joined in a cheap deal from Preston late in the winter market. However, he is still yet to play for his new club due to injuries and competition for places.
There has been speculation that the 25-year-old could leave Liverpool without ever making an appearance. He needs to be playing more regularly and looks unlikely to do so at Anfield.
But there is still a chance that he could stay, with Jurgen Klopp previously denying he was just a short-term fix.
Now, Davies has provided an update on his situation as he looks ahead to next season.
He wrote on Instagram: “Finished rehabbing my calf this morning at AXA!
“Looking forward to a productive off season and a positive upcoming season! Thanks for the support since I joined Reds! See you soon!”
If he stays at Liverpool, Davies will have to compete for a place with Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip, as well as Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams if they remain at the club.
It also seems likely they will be signing Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig, so Davies would have his work cut out for him.
Liverpool tipped to make profit on Davies
Despite his seemingly optimistic outlook, Davies has been tipped to seek pastures new by some pundits.
For example, former Liverpool and Preston striker Neil Mellor predicted in March that the Reds could sell him for profit.
“I’ve watched a lot of Championship football as well as Preston games with Ben and he’s one of the best defenders in the Championship,” Mellor told the Liverpool Echo.
“He is a player that I have always believed can play in the Premier League and I am absolutely delighted he is going to get that opportunity and now it is up to him to take it.
“This kid can play for England if he really grasps it.

“He is not someone who was a stop-gap; he could potentially, long-term, be the answer and that is up to him.
“If he’s not, then Liverpool will make a lot of money on him because he is a lot closer to a £20million defender than a £2m one.”
