Free agent’s ambition gives Tottenham renewed hope of summer deal
Tottenham’s chances of signing Jerome Boateng have increased with news that he will not move to the USA and wants to continue playing in Europe.
Spurs have recently been linked with the 32-year-old, who will leave Bayern Munich this summer after a decade of service. The Bavarians opted not to offer him fresh terms despite his contribution to their ninth successive Bundesliga title. The former Manchester City ace made 29 league starts and scored once as Bayern cruised to glory once again.
Speculation began to increase that he would head across the Atlantic to see out his playing days in MLS. But Goal are reporting that the defender has no intention of turning his back on the European game.
He feels he can still do a job at the highest level and wants to reclaim his place in the Germany side. Boateng was omitted from Joachim Low’s 26-man Euro 2020 party.
He has 76 caps for his country and was disappointed not to get the call. But Bayern chief Hansi Flick will replace Low at the helm of Die Mannschaft following this summer’s tournament.
That is said to be one of the main reasons why the former Hamburg star will not be heading stateside. There will doubtless now be a scramble for his signature.
He is more than capable of operating at the highest level for a few more years.
Boateng set for overseas adventure
It is claimed that the Berlin-born ace does not want to play for one of Bayern’s rivals. Therefore a move to England, Spain or Italy seems on the cards.
Spurs were mentioned as possible suitors earlier this month but the player’s demands could be an issue. He earned a reported £210,000 a week with the Bavarians but is willing to accept less from his new employers.
However, he wants a three-year deal and, turning 33 in September, that is likely to scare off a few clubs. Bild claimed Boateng is “top of the wish list” at Spurs but much will depend on who replaces Jose Mourinho.
The veteran has played just one season outside Germany. He arrived at City in June 2010 for £10.4 million and signed a five-year deal.
However, he failed to settle and, after just 16 top-flight appearances, was sold to Bayern. The rest is history, with 364 outings in all competitions and a bulging trophy cabinet.
In addition to his league triumphs, Boateng also claimed five DFB-Pokals and the Champions League on two occasions.
