Fresh sense of urgency as Madrid, Mbappe ultimatum sparks critical hours

Real Madrid have told Paris Saint-Germain to accept their offer for Kylian Mbappe by the end of the weekend or they will pull out of the deal, according to reports in France.

With Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi both having changed clubs this summer, perhaps the biggest remaining transfer saga as the deadline approaches is that of Mbappe. Despite PSG’s acquisition of Messi and many others, the French forward is still considering his future.

Real Madrid want to show they still have spending power by making Mbappe their record signing. They failed with a first bid but have now raised their offer to €180m plus €10m in bonuses that will be easy to achieve.

Mbappe already has years of experience but is still only 22, so could go on to dominate world football over the next decade. Even so, such a fee for a player in the final year of his contract seems like an irrefutable offer.

PSG do not appear to think so, though, after already rejecting one offer for one of their star men. They are yet to respond to Real’s latest advances either.

According to Le Parisien, Madrid remain insistent on getting the deal over the line. Therefore, they have given PSG a deadline of the end of the weekend to accept their offer. If not, they will back away from the deal.

Paris must therefore weigh up the pros and cons of keeping Mbappe, given the risk that he might not renew his contract.

Madrid, for their part, are aware that Mbappe will be on international duty with France through the week. It would be too hard to organise the finer points of the transfer by then, so they are making PSG hurry to a decision.

The Spanish side have made it known that they will not raise their offer, either, even though Paris deem it to still be too low.

Mbappe has not told Pochettino plans

Besides, PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino has denied any knowledge of the idea that Mbappe wants to leave, as has been claimed.

“No, he hasn’t told me anything about wanting to leave PSG,” he said at a press conference on Saturday.

“Kylian has prepared himself well for tomorrow’s game.

“The position of our president and our sporting director is very clear on Mbappe’s situation at PSG.”
