Frustrated midfielder seeks Man Utd solution as calls for summer exit grow

Reports claim Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek has demanded talks with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer about his prospects at the club.

Van de Beek, 24, moved to Old Trafford for a reported £35 million last summer. The Netherlands international had gained attention at Ajax, scoring 41 goals from 175 appearances in all competitions. That prompted the Red Devils to make a move and he arrived to much fanfare in August last year.

However, things have not gone to plan for the Dutchman, with only four starts among 19 Premier League appearances. That is in stark contrast to his Amsterdam experience where he was a regular Eredivisie starter.

Van de Beek was given game time in both the FA Cup and EFL Cup this term. And he also featured in the Champions League and Europa League.

But it is regular league action that the youngster craves as he outlined earlier this season.

“I’m a patient person, but of course you go there to play as much as possible,” he said back in November. “I also think – in the minutes that I have made, in the times that I have come in – I have shown that I can add something to the team.”

He was an unused substitute as United lost the Europa League final to Villarreal on penalties last week. And, according to The Telegraph, he now wants clarity on how the club see his career developing.

Van de Beek urged to leave Old Trafford

Van de Beek has been selected for this summer’s European Championship despite his lack of action. Frank de Boer knows just what the talented schemer can do, having seen him over the past few years.

But it is clear that the situation is not tenable and the man from Amersfoort will want more game time. One man who has already seen enough is former United midfielder Arnold Muhren.

The 69-year-old has questioned United’s motivation for signing him. And he feels the situation demands that his compatriot questions whether he would be better off elsewhere.

“When you see how little he is used, you really wonder why they actually paid €39m for him. That midfield is really overcrowded,” he told De Telegraaf, via Sport Witness.

“Bruno Fernandes plays in the position where Van de Beek comes into his own. And in my view he one of the most important players of Manchester United.

“They say ‘he needs to get used to it’. But nobody has to get used to that. The problem is that he doesn’t have enough to play. At his age it is important to keep clocking minutes.”
