Good news and bad for Liverpool as pundit claims Mo Salah’s new mega-deal will give Anfield bosses huge headache

Mo Salah being ‘close’ to agreeing a huge new ‘£400,000-a-week’ contract is about to give Liverpool a major problem, according to former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor.

The Reds have been working on a new deal for their talismanic forward for some time, with Salah out of contract in the summer of 2023. And, after labelling the talks a ‘sensitive situation’, it appears that the 29-year-old is finally ready to put pen to paper.

Salah will join the likes Virgil Van Dijk, Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jordan Henderson and Andy Robertson in committing their futures to the club since last summer.

However, Agbonlahor sees Salah’s deal causing a massive problem, as it will smash the club’s existing wage structure – leading to other stars wanting more of the same.

And with likes of Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino’s deals also being up for renewal in 2023, that’s not good.

Agbonlahor told Football Insider: “I think there’s going to be big problems at Liverpool because I’m hearing Salah is close to signing a very big contract of £400,000-a-week.

“The problem with that and the reason that Liverpool are scared to give him that is because Mane will want similar, Van Dijk will want to renegotiate because he’s just signed a new contract.

“When you go over the wage cap at a club the doors will open and other players are going to want increases.

“If Salah gets £400,000-a-week, then Mane will want £350,000-a-week. Liverpool are probably thinking ‘Can we give him that when we’ve got Diaz who is coming in as a good player’.

Expensive Liverpool problem on the horizon

“It’s going to be very interesting and very expensive for Liverpool. It’s definitely a big problem.

“But if I’m Mo Salah I’m asking for what I deserve. He will not even be close to what Neymar’s earning, what Lionel Messi’s earning and what Kylian Mbappe will be earning and he’s on par with them at the moment.

“He will want to be paid what he deserves. He’s the top goalscorer in the Premier League, the best player in the Premier League. ‘Give me what I deserve, if there’s a wage cap that’s not my problem’.”

Salah and Liverpool, fresh off of booking their place in the Champions League last four, are back in action on Saturday when they face Man City in the FA Cup semi-finals.
