Haaland reveals he wants to emulate Tuchel’s Chelsea in significant hint

Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea-linked striker Erling Haaland says that his “big dream” is to win the Champions League during his career.

The 20-year-old reflected such ambition with his explosive debut in the competition which brought his name to the world’s attention. He netted a hat-trick for RB Salzburg, but did not stop there. Indeed, he scored 23 goals for the Austrian club in 2019/20 before Dortmund snapped him up last January.

Since then, though, Haaland has gone from strength to strength despite his still young age. He has hit 57 goals in 59 games for the Bundesliga club, consequently earning even bigger transfer links.

Chelsea are one such side linked with a massive move for the Norway international in the coming months. However, he has said that he will be “respectful” to his current contract this summer.

Nevertheless, Chelsea’s current crop have already achieved Haaland’s dream, lifting the trophy last month.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Haaland said: “For as long as I can remember, even when I was a really young kid, I was watching the Champions League.

“There were great teams with huge legends scoring goals. So that became my dream.

“My dream was to play in the Champions League, to score in the Champions League. You know that is where the best players play and that’s where the best players belong.”

Asked what it would mean to him to lift European football’s biggest trophy, Haaland said that it is his “big dream”.

He added: “To win the Champions League one day. Hopefully I can lift that trophy and that really would be, well, amazing.”

Despite the constant transfer links with Chelsea, Dortmund’s CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has poured further cold water over the chances of a summer transfer for Haaland.

He said when asked how many clubs can afford the striker’s fee: “Your assumption is fundamentally wrong: Because there are no conditions from us.

“I have the clear expectation Erling Haaland will still play for us next season. And I don’t worry about anything else.”

Haaland taking steps to improve

Elsewhere in his interview, Haaland said that he has taken steps to improve his game of late.

He said: “I have been taking a couple of steps over the past few years and I think they have been good steps for me, personally, to get out of my comfort zone and to develop even more.

“I want to challenge myself in everything that I do. It’s something I think about.

“It’s also for everyone to always do this. People can sometimes be too comfortable staying in their ‘zone’ so I think it’s important to get out of that.”

Haaland would be an ideal signing for Chelsea, who have only scored more than two goals in a game once since Thomas Tuchel took charge in January.
