Harry Kane has effectively confirmed that he wants out of Tottenham this summer and says a decision on his future “will ultimately be down to me” and not chairman Daniel Levy.

Kane appeared to say an emotional goodbye to Spurs fans following Wednesday night’s 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa. The result, after a woeful performance in front of their returning supporters, leaves the club in danger of completely missing out on European football next season.

On Monday, the bombshell news broke that the England skipper had formally requested a transfer from his boyhood club. Indeed, it’s claimed that Kane has a gentleman’s agreement with Levy to allow him to go.

Spurs are reluctant to sell their talisman, who has three years remaining on his contract, with Levy ready to demand as much as £150million for the Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United target.

Asked by Gary Neville, in an episode of The Overlap Podcast, if his career was at a crossroads, Kane said: “I think so. I think it’s definitely a conversation to be had with the club.

“Yeah, I want to be playing in the biggest games, the biggest moments…

“I hope that we can have that conversation.

“I’m sure that [Daniel Levy] will want to set out the plan of where he sees it. But ultimately it’s going to be down to me and how I feel and what’s going to be the best for me and my career this moment in time.”

Asked how he thinks the conversation with Levy will go, Kane said: “He has been great with me if I am being totally honest. He has always awarded me with contracts and has been fair with me.

“So we have always had a good relationship. I am not sure how that conversation will go to be honest. You do not know what the chairman is thinking. He might want to sell me if he thinks he can get £100million for me. I am not going to be worth that in the next two or three years.

“I hope we have a good enough relationship, I have given the club 16 years of my life. So I hope we can have an honest conversation and see where we are at.”

Kane wants trophies over legacy

When asked what is more important to him, winning trophies or creating a one-club legacy, Kane added: “For me, I do not want to come to the end of my career and have any regrets. So I want to be the best I can be.

“I have never said I will stay at Spurs for the rest of my career and I have never said I will leave Spurs. People might look at it that I am desperate for trophies. I still feel I have got almost another career to play, another seven or eight years in the Premier League.

“I am not rushing anything. I’m not desperate to do anything. I just want to be the best I can be. For sure I feel I have got so much more to give, I can be even better than what I have been and produce even better numbers than I am producing at the moment.

“I am not afraid to say I want to be the best. I am not afraid to say I want to try and get to the level that Ronaldo and Messi got to. That is my ultimate goal – winning trophies season in, season out, scoring 50, 60, 70 goals season in, season out. That is the standard I want to set myself.”

Kane’s comments certainly appear to have come from a place where he feels he has done all he can at Tottenham.

That will no doubt spread even more panic across the club, as they battle to keep their talismanic leader.
