‘Have to return to Manchester United’ – Anthony Martial reveals ‘complicated’ club future

Anthony Martial has suggested staying at Sevilla would be “complicated” and that he moved there in the knowledge he would “surely” return to Manchester United.

Sevilla signed Martial on a six-month loan in January after an indifferent start to the season with Manchester United. For the Premier League club, he had made just four starts since the season began.

Therefore, Manchester United decided to loan him out, since there was little room for him in their plans. They sent him to Sevilla, without an option to buy, for the remainder of the season.

While in Spain, Martial has managed eight starts between La Liga and the Europa League, either side of some injury issues. He got one goal in the latter competition before Sevilla were knocked out, but is yet to get off the mark in La Liga.

However, he is happy to be getting his gametime back up again. That said, Martial cannot necessarily foresee a long-term stay in Seville.

He told ABC: “I see it very complicated to be able to continue at Sevilla. I’m not worried about that right now.

“I came knowing that it would be six months and then I would surely have to return to Manchester United.

“I’m very happy with the experience of playing in a new club, as big as Sevilla and having minutes again. If we manage to be a top four team, we will have achieved the goal and I will be happy for the fans, who have been very good to me since I arrived.”

Sevilla currently sit third in La Liga, three points above fourth and four points above fifth.

Martial is glad to be a part of their efforts to secure Champions League football, especially after shaking off his injury issues.

The French forward added: “Now I feel very well. I was able to recover from the injury, which was a complicated injury that required a reasonable recovery time, but now I’m much better.

“I have been very careful to be able to return and be available to the team as soon as possible, which is why I decided to come to Sevilla.”

Martial finding adaptation difficult, but hopes for strong end to season

Now, he will have to up his output. It is only a couple of years since Martial scored 23 goals across all competitions for Man Utd. But since then, he has managed tallies of just seven and two respectively.

On the topic of getting back to his best, he said: “I’m working on it. I came to be able to enjoy football again after a long time without playing.

“I know I can be at a higher level, and I work for it. But first the injury, then the adaptation to a new club and a new city, is being difficult for me because of the language barrier.”

Martial may have to adapt again in the summer, though. Even though he seemed certain of his return to Man Utd, that may not last long.

Although his contract with his parent club runs until 2024, there still may be no room for him there. Instead, United may decide to sell him elsewhere ahead of next season.

In recent months, he has been linked with the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Borussia Dortmund and Inter Milan. There will be much to consider in the summer.
