Huge Tottenham offer behind manager ‘divorce’ from Serie A giants

Two reports on Wednesday claim Tottenham are willing to break the bank to lure Inter manager Antonio Conte to the club as Jose Mourinho’s replacement.

The north Londoners are on the lookout for a new boss to replace the Portuguese tactician. He was sacked on April 19 after a campaign that had fizzled out, with Ryan Mason put in temporary charge. Many names have been put forward as possibilities, with Belgium chief Roberto Martinez the latest to emerge.

But Conte’s name has resurfaced despite the fact he has reportedly already turned down the opportunity. Earlier this month, it was said that four Italian coaches had rejected the idea of working at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Conte was on that list but it now seems as though the link is not dead in the water. On Wednesday, Corriere dello Sport (via Sport Witness) suggested Spurs are keen on the former Chelsea boss.

And it seems as though all is not rosy at the San Siro, as Inter are on the verge of a ‘divorce’ with Conte. That is because there are insufficient funds available to the 51-year-old to build on his success, leaving the manager frustrated.

It is not known whether he fancies another tilt at the Premier League but would be a popular choice.

Tottenham offer driving Conte from Inter

The other report comes from La Stampa, who believe Daniel levy’s ‘pharaonic offer’ to Conte is turning his head. The former Italy boss is said to earn €13m at present, with Spurs’ offer reportedly between €15m and €20m per year.

That would represent a considerable hike in his wages but it is not only personal terms that might convince him to sign. La Stampa say that Tottenham’s ‘offer of recruitment and possibility of improving the latest results’ is his ‘most attractive offer’.

Much will depend on the relationship between the ex-Juventus coach and the Nerazzurri. It would be a shock departure if he did leave, having guided Inter to their first Scudetto since 2009-2010.

They finished 11 points clear of AC Milan, with Juve only managing a fourth-place finish in 2020-2021. Inter will feature in next season’s Champions League while Spurs must play in the Europa Conference League play-off round.

It might not be a great advert for the club but Conte will be well aware of their potential having managed in England for two years. One immediate concern for any new manager will be the future of Harry Kane.

The England skipper look set to leave and the hunt will them be on for a big-name replacement.
