Imminent Tottenham signing reveals pitch that convinced him to join club

Cristian Romero has revealed that he chose Tottenham Hotspur due to the project they presented to him and believes his impending transfer is the “right choice” for him to keep growing.

Tottenham are all set to get the first of two centre-back signings they have been targeting this summer. Rumours about a move for Romero have been growing in recent weeks and they had a bid accepted recently. The transfer is not official yet, but the Argentina international is due to arrive in England imminently.

Before his flight, the Atalanta defender spoke to the Italian media about why he is making the move. He only joined the Bergamo-based side last summer on a two-year loan from Juventus. They have activated their option to buy him early and will turn a quick profit with the sale to Spurs.

For Romero, it will be a new challenge in a new league, although he has risen to such tasks admirably before. In fact, he was named as the best defender in Serie A last season.

Despite having the chance to continue his progression there, he has instead opted to test himself in the Premier League. It is a decision he believes is the right one.

He told Sky Sport Italia (as translated by Sport Witness): “I’m happy to have made a right choice again. I’m very happy for the year I had at Atalanta, I thank all of Bergamo, I’m sorry to leave it but I have to think about my career and I hope this is a good choice.

“I have to keep growing and doing this, I have to think about doing well now.”

Romero reveals reason for Tottenham choice

Romero will be brought to Tottenham by former Juventus official Fabio Paratici. The new Tottenham managing director has made an effective pitch to the 23-year-old to convince him to join.

Romero said: “I thank them, from the first day they were interested in me. I liked the project they have for me and so I chose Tottenham for this.

“Now I have to answer on the pitch, but first I want to thank all of Bergamo and Atalanta, the Percassi family and all my teammates. The coach who made me grow in a way that I never would have thought, I say thank you to everyone.

“It’s been an incredible year for me. I never thought I’d get to this level. Right now I’m thinking that three years ago before arriving in Italy I almost quit football.

“The Italian league was very important for me; it made me grow in all respects and I’m very happy to have played here and now I have to continue. The Premier League is a very difficult championship, but I have to be ready to do everything and continue as I have done until now.

“I’m sorry too, I only have to say thank you to them, since I arrived in Bergamo they have behaved very well with me and now there’s an Atalanta fan in London.”
