Joel Glazer responds to Gary Neville scolding as Man Utd told they are ‘laughing stock’

Manchester United chief Joel Glazer has admitted that staying silent at the club is the wrong approach to take, after recent scrutiny.

Club ownership has come under fire more than ever in recent months after the European Super League fiasco. United featured among 12 clubs who announced bombshell plans in April to form a breakaway competition. However, the plans collapsed spectacularly within a matter of days.

Nevertheless, the remnants of the plans have left scars on the owners of the 12 clubs.

United have taken steps to repair the damage, creating a Fan Advisory Board earlier this month.

Glazer also featured in a recent Fan Forum, with The Guardian sharing the minutes of the meeting.

The United executive vice-chairman said: “We always took the approach that we should stay in the background [and] let the manager, the players, the people at Old Trafford, be the ones out in front, communicating and talking.

“In retrospect, that was not the right approach and there’s a middle ground.

“Our silence wrongly created the impression that we don’t care, that we aren’t football fans, that we only care about our commercial interests and money.

“I can assure you nothing could be further from the truth.”

The newspaper reveals that one fan told Glazer that their club had become a “laughing stock”.

Former United star Gary Neville has had his own say, launching an impassioned rant in immediate response to the news back in April.

Meanwhile, he took direct aim at the Glazer family for the first time, insisting that the time had come to reveal his true views on the owners.

Glazer responds to Gary Neville

Glazer said: “I know Gary has been, to say the least, pretty hard on us, and it’s OK. Everybody has their views.

“There’s two ways to look at it – you can just shut the person out because they’re not saying something nice about you. Or you can pause, you can listen. You can’t ignore people, we have got to listen.

“You can’t necessarily accomplish everything, it’s not always that simple. Sometimes things are a little more complex, but Gary’s a legend.

“Gary did so much for this club. Gary has good ideas, good thoughts, and they’re heard.”
