Jurgen Klopp intervention key as Liverpool near significant transfer scoop for second signing of summer

Liverpool have moved into pole position to sign Florian Neuhaus this summer after Jurgen Klopp personally stepped in to aid the Reds’ hopes, according to a report.

The Reds recently waved goodbye to one of their most reliable performers after Georginio Wijnaldum’s free exit to PSG was confirmedWijnaldum promises to spill secrets surrounding his departure, but more importantly, he will leave a gaping void in the Reds’ midfield.

Liverpool already boast seven first-team midfielders on the books. One school of thought is that rising youngster Curtis Jones could plug the gap and avert the need to sanction a big-money purchase.

However, a number of big names have been linked with the Reds and it seems they are keen to replace the Dutchman.

Brighton’s Yves Bissouma, Leicester playmaker Youri Tielemans and Neuhaus have all been mentioned as possible replacements in the Liverpool side.

And it seems Neuhaus is fast emerging as Klopp’s No 1 target.

The Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder, 24, was linked with Liverpool throughout May. A prior report even went as far as to suggest he was ‘leaning towards a change’.

At one point it seemed as though Liverpool had missed out. That’s amid claims Neuhaus was ready to wait for a summer 2022 move to Bayern Munich.

Real Madrid are also credited with an interest as they look to freshen up their side.

However, as per Don Balon, Liverpool are now the outstanding clear favourites to land Neuhaus.

According to the Spanish outlet, Klopp has personally spoken to Neuhaus about a move to Anfield, with those talks swaying the player’s mind.

They write that the midfielder is now making a switch to Anfield his priority. Furthermore, it’s claimed Liverpool are now set to meet the €40m (£34.3m) exit clause that exists in his contract.

Neuhaus also recently added fuel to the fire by commenting: “I can very well imagine a move abroad.”

Michael Edwards told of Wijnaldum mistake

Gary Neville, meanwhile, reckons Michael Edwards has made a huge mistake in allowing Wijnaldum to depart.

“[He’s an] unsung hero,” said the United legend. “People talk about all the great players Liverpool have and he very rarely gets a mention.

“I think he’ll be badly missed next season. It’ll prove very difficult to replace him at Liverpool. He’s one of those players that keeps things ticking.

“You don’t look at him and think he’s doing anything outstandingly well. But I would imagine his teammates respect him enormously because he covers a lot of areas on the pitch.

“He does things simply for his teammates. He’s an unselfish player and he’s an important player for this Dutch team.”

Wijnaldum played his last match for Liverpool against Crystal Palace on the final day of the Premier League season. He leaves with a ringing endorsement from Klopp.
