Klopp names veteran Prem star who came to mind after Alisson ‘worldie’

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says that Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud would be proud if he scored the way Alisson Becker did.

Reds goalkeeper Alisson produced one of the moments of the season on Sunday by heading his side to a dramatic victory over West Brom. Liverpool needed a win to keep their hopes of making the top four alive, but were locked at 1-1. After a second-half struggle, though, Alisson’s bullet header with almost the final action of the match sparked raucous celebrations.

The header was a special moment for Alisson, who lost his father earlier this year. As such, he gave an emotional interview after the match, dedicating the goal to his family.

Meanwhile, Klopp hailed the contribution as “outstanding” in his interview with Sky Sports.

Speaking to BBC Sport [live blog, 19:05], though, the Reds boss compared the goal to one typically scored by Chelsea marksman Giroud.

“Wow, is a pretty good word. It was spectacular and a good game. What a moment!” Klopp said.

“That is so far the highlight. I hope we have time for another highlight [this season]. It was a tricky game. Winning that way is really special. I couldn’t be happier in the moment.

“It’s the best goal I’ve ever seen scored by a goalkeeper! Striker’s score like that. If Olivier Giroud scores like that you say it’s a worldie. It’s a worldie! Wow!”

He added: “[Alisson’s] our player, our boy and our brother. When he is suffering we are all suffering. It’s hard in these moments.

“There are more important things than football but when football can deliver moments like this for him, and all the boys, and our fans, then football is the best thing for a few seconds than anything else out there.”

Liverpool now sit a point behind fourth-placed Chelsea and three behind Leicester in third. However, neither side can achieve their maximum points, as they clash on Tuesday.

Therefore, should Liverpool win against Burnley on Wednesday and Crystal Palace on Sunday, they will displace one of their rivals in the top four.

Klopp resets Liverpool focus

With coronavirus restrictions easing further in England on Monday, fans will return to Premier League grounds for the final two rounds of the season.

Liverpool will reunite with their supporters on Sunday, but Klopp warned about the atmosphere at Turf Moor on Wednesday.

“We are not even halfway through. We have to win going to Turf Moor. We have to win,” he said.

“There will be a proper atmosphere and will not be a friendly game. West Brom fought really hard.

“I heard Sam Allardyce asked for professionalism before the game and he got that proper answer. In the situation we are in the only thing we have to do is keep pressure on our competitors around us. We recover and go again.”
