Klopp told ‘brilliant’ Wijnaldum successor would offer Liverpool big missing trait

Youri Tielemans would be a “brilliant” signing for Liverpool and the Leicester midfielder would add a trait rarely seen from the Reds this season, says one pundit.

Belgium international Tielemans is likely to play a key role for his country at this summer’s Euro 2020 tournament. He enjoyed a standout campaign in which he scored the winner in the FA Cup final. He did so in style too, netting from long range to give the Foxes their first triumph in the competition.

As a result of Tielemans’ standout performances, Liverpool have reportedly identified him as a transfer target.

The Reds are supposedly targeting the 24-year-old as a replacement for the departing Georginio Wijnaldum. What’s more, Leicester’s potential signing of Boubakary Soumare could open the door for Liverpool and Tielemans.

According to pundit Kevin Campbell, Liverpool should definitely be looking into signing the midfielder, with the Reds struggling for long-range goals last season.

Thiago Alcantara scored one such strike against Southampton. However, centre-back Rhys Williams revealed that he had to encourage the Spaniard to trust his shooting.

Meanwhile, Fabinho has a tendency for long-range strikes. His drop back to defence for a large portion of the season affected his ability to contribute in attack, though.

Campbell told Football Insider: “Tielemans would be a brilliant signing.

“I think he would fit in at Liverpool perfectly. He will add more of a goal threat as well, especially from range.

“He is a very good footballer and he would be very capable filling the void left by Wijnaldum.

“Listen, when you are Liverpool and you lose a player like Wijnaldum you have to replace him with quality. Wijnaldum is so underrated and when he is not there Liverpool miss him.

“[Jurgen] Klopp will buy right though. He knows what he needs and he will purchase correctly.”

Liverpool bolstered in defence

Liverpool have already added to their squad ahead of next season, though, with Ibrahima Konate arriving.

The French centre-back moves from RB Leipzig for £36million and will hopefully ensure that Liverpool do not go through another defensive availability nightmare.

Klopp has lauded the player’s talent and potential as he looks forward to next season, while one journalist has had his say on the player.
