Leeds begin 2021/22 away at Man Utd, Liverpool clash also up early

Leeds will begin their 2021/22 Premier League campaign with an away trip to face fiercest rivals Manchester United on Saturday August 14, before a home game with Everton and a trip to face Burnley complete August.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side made a huge impression on their return to the Premier League last term. They finished ninth and won an army of admirers thanks to their exciting brand of football. The challenge for 2021/22 is to build on that and push even higher.

Leeds had asked the Premier League to ensure their opening game was away with work continuing on their Elland Road pitch.

And they’ve been ‘rewarded’ with one of the toughest starts they could ask for – a trip to Old Trafford. Leeds were hammered 6-2 there last season; Scott McTominay scoring twice in the first three minutes.

But they then discovered a new-found defensive steel; illustrated by their strong end to the season.

The return clash with Man Utd will be on February 19.

Leeds also tackle Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool at home on September 11, while travel to Anfield on Boxing Day. The New Year begins with a home date against Burnley.

Bielsa’s side round up the season with games against Arsenal (a) on May 7, Brighton (h) on May 15 and a trip to Brentford on May 22.

Bielsa inspired by Leicester

Leeds boss Bielsa admits he’s been inspired by the success enjoyed by Leicester.

Matching their efforts will prove very difficult of course, but it’s a job the Leeds boss will aim for.

“What they have achieved is evidence of the great things that they have achieved,” Bielsa said. “To have won the Premier League and the FA Cup the other day is a level that very few teams can have. But this team has managed to do it.”
