Leeds United are still being tipped to sign Rodrigo de Paul this summer with Angus Kinnear’s recent denials about the Udinese player suggested to be rouse.
The Whites head into the upcoming transfer window looking to progress after a solid first season back in the Premier League. On the managerial front, reports have emerged that Marcelo Bielsa’s future is all but secure; the Argentine is on the verge of agreeing a new deal at Elland Road.
As such, focus can properly turn to how to take Leeds to the next level with new additions.
De Paul is one player who has had links with a move to Elland Road for some time. The Whites were strongly linked with the player last summer, though a bid was never forthcoming.
The Argentine playmaker has since been linked with Liverpool, while reports lately have suggested Atletico Madrid are keen.
However, former Leeds midfielder David Norris believes Leeds are still lurking. Furthermore, he thinks United can still get a deal done for De Paul this summer.
“That one’s not gone away for a year now. I fully expect that he knows Leeds are interested now,” Norris told Football Transfer Tavern.
“Leeds have shown an interest for a long time, so normally with that perseverance, I’d absolutely expect Leeds to try to get that one over the line.
“He fits their style of play, Leeds will have done due diligence on him and from what we’ve seen of him, and the way Leeds play, he would suit their style of play.
“He seems to want the move, Leeds want it, so I expect Leeds to really go after that one. I just hope, potentially, they don’t get gazumped.”
Kinnear downplays De Paul to Leeds claims
Udinese are said to be seeking a fee of around €40m (£34.6m) for De Paul.
That fee appears a little steep given how finances have been impacted in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
As such, Leeds chief executive Kinnear has recently done his best to dampen claims his side could move for the Argentine.
“If we had the money, I think we would just buy him, just to shut you guys up,” he told The Athletic journalist Phil Hay’s podcast.
“I don’t think that one has any legs.”
