Leeds issue brief statement on Kalvin Phillips amid Euro 2020 injury fears

Leeds United believe Kalvin Phillips will be fit to take his place in the England squad at Euro 2020 – if selected – after sustaining a nasty-looking shoulder injury on Sunday.

The Whites ended their first campaign back in the top flight with a flourish. Their 3-1 win over West Brom secured a ninth-placed finish and ensured they ended the season with four straight victories. Rodrigo opened the scoring and celebrated with the returning fans, while Patrick Bamford and Phillips added further goals.

Indeed, Phillips’ free-kick was his first goal in the Premier League.

However, the game ended on a sour note for Leeds with Phillips needing lengthy treatment following a tackle. The midfielder, in winning the ball, ended up in a heap. After lengthy treatment, he was able to hobble off – but it did not look good.

The midfielder has been one of his side’s standout players this term and will be a firm candidate for England’s Euro 2020 squad if fit.

However, Leeds provided a very brief update on Monday morning after posting a message of optimism on their official website.

It read: “Kalvin picked up a shoulder injury in yesterday’s season finale. Currently being treated conservatively, the club remains confident he will be available for Euro 2020, if selected.”

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa was unsure of the severity of the injury after the match.

The Argentine, who is expected to sign a new deal at Leeds, commented: “I couldn’t tell you if the injury is severe or not but we hope he can go to the Euros.”

Phillips is expected to battle Jordan Henderson and Declan Rice for a place in the squad. However, with 26 players at his disposal, it’s possible Gareth Southgate may take all three.

The squad is formally announced at 1pm, Tuesday.

Henderson hopeful of England role

Henderson, meanwhile, was an unused substitute as Liverpool secured third place with a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace.

Nevertheless, his nearing return to action will serve as a boost to Southgate.

Now the Liverpool skipper is hopeful he can take his place in the squad this summer.

“I was itching to get on, but I’ve only trained a few times with the team, so it’s probably not the wisest thing,” he said.

“But I feel good, I’ve been training the last few weeks on my own. Now, hopefully I can get fit for the Euros. Fingers crossed.

“I know I haven’t appeared for a long time, but I’ve still been working hard in the background, so I feel good, but I’ve obviously got to train, hopefully with England, and be ready for the Euros.”
