Leeds learn price for Bundesliga forward Bielsa ‘following for months’
Leeds United are said to be tracking Hertha Berlin forward Matheus Cunha who could be available for any club prepared to pay the ‘right price’.
The Brazilian arrived in Europe back in 2017, signing with Swiss club Sion. After a successful season in which he scored 10 league goals, he penned a five-year deal with German outfit RB Leipzig. But the youngster struggled in the Bundesliga and managed to notch just two goals from 35 outings.
He was rarely handed a start and it was no surprise when he was sold to Hertha in January 2020. The Brazil Under-23 ace was handed a four-and-a-half-year deal at Olympiastadion and has found his feet in the German game.
He scored five league goals from just 11 appearances last term and has seven from 27 outings in 2020-2021. But it is not just all about the goals as the South American is also a provider, with six assists this season.
He is currently sidelined with an ankle injury but is attracting attention across Europe. In addition to the Whites, French club Monaco plus Italian duo Napoli and Atalanta are said to hold an interest.
But Sky Germany reporter Max Bielefeld (via Sport Witness) insists that the Elland Road outfit have shown most interest.
On Monday he said Leeds have been ‘following the player closely for months already’. And Hertha will reportedly sell for the ‘right price’ of €30m.
Bielsa looking for help up front
Leeds have enjoyed a superb return to the Premier League after 16 years and will finish the season comfortably in mid table. They sit 10th and have taken 53 points from 36 games played.
Patrick Bamford is the club’s top goalscorer, with 15 in the league, while Stuart Dallas and Jack Harrison both have eight. And with Rodrigo failing to hit the heights, it seems as though Bielsa will look to recruit a forward this summer.
Cunha could fit the bill as he started life as a central striker but has been played more on the left by Hertha. He would add creativity as well as goals but there might be negotiations needed over his price tag.
It is unknown if any of his other suitors would be prepared to match the asking price. Finances are tight throughout the world of football due to the pandemic.
But Bielsa knows that he must keep adding quality to his squad to avoid a second-season dip.
